Rates
For back-of the-book indexes, payment is typically on a per-page rate in the range of $2.50 - $5.00 per page. Density of text per page and complexity of subject matters are taken into consideration in determining the exact rate. For example, indexes for academic books are typically $4.00 - $5.00/page, whereas children's books are usually $2.50/page, and trade books average at $3.25/page.
For periodical indexing, as long as the indexing is to the article and not to the page, payment is on a per article rate, similar to the book per-page rate. For database indexing, either a per-record rate, similar to the book per-page rate, or an hourly rate is charged.
